Job Description
ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
ProPublica is an award-winning independent nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust - and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account. Our investigative journalism does more than expose wrongdoing and injustice; we intend for it to spark real-world change. With a team of more than 100 dedicated journalists across the country, we produce reporting that has contributed to the passage of new laws; reversals of harmful policies and practices; and accountability for leaders at local, state and national levels.
About the Talent Team
The talent team is responsible for ensuring that ProPublica recruits, hires and retains the talented and diverse staff we need. We are committed to recruiting and retaining people from communities that have long been underrepresented not only in journalism, but particularly in investigative journalism. (Read more about our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and what we're doing about it.) In addition to guiding our recruitment and hiring process with a focus on equity, inclusion and a positive candidate experience, the department also leads our retention efforts by spearheading staffwide trainings to build skills and other enriching development opportunities.
About the Role
The talent acquisition manager will manage our recruiting and hiring process to ensure that ProPublica attracts and hires the people we need to achieve our goals. The person in this role will build strong relationships with hiring leaders and use that insight to suggest ways to streamline processes and improve the hiring experience. You'll attend recruiting conferences, identify and keep in regular contact with promising job candidates, and manage our relationships with other professional and affinity organizations whose work focuses on development and diversity.
This role will report to the assistant managing editor charged with leading the talent department. You'll also work collaboratively with the human resources department and manage the talent associate.
In This Role You Will:
• Manage and improve the recruiting and hiring process for all open positions, including not just roles for journalists but also the development, finance and other business teams.
• Coordinate training for hiring managers and interview panelists on the best practices for implementing structured interviews, scorecards and other ways to make our process more fair, efficient and effective.
• Develop a recruitment strategy that meets the organization's critical and hard-to-fill talent needs. That includes advising hiring managers on how to help find a talented candidate pool and developing hiring plans that allow us to identify the right people for our open positions.
• Conduct pipeline maintenance, including deploying senior leaders to recruit passive candidates and nurturing relationships with promising talent.
• Manage our external recruitment budget and efforts, including collaborating with HR and the assistant managing editor to coordinate ProPublica's presence at affinity and industry conferences, and making data-driven decisions around how we advertise open roles.
• Work with organization leaders to forecast future talent needs to better strategize around our recruitment and hiring efforts.
• Be a thought partner with the assistant managing editor and HR director to make our orientation process more dynamic, effective and reflective of our newsroom culture for both remote and in-office employees.
Qualifications:
• 4+ years experience in human resources or talent acquisition.
• Experience using an applicant tracking system (ATS) or other recruitment software, and thoughts on how to deploy them effectively.
• Experience using Greenhouse is a plus.
• Knowledge of Google Workspace tools, including Drive and Sheets, as well as Microsoft Excel.
• Project-management experience; if that includes creating panel interviews, that is a plus. You are organized and detail-oriented. You build systems to track the nuances of different projects so you can quickly switch between them.
• Proven experience in managing hiring processes and building diverse talent pools; familiarity with best practices for using metrics to create an equitable hiring experience.
• Ability to think strategically and operationally. You'll be on the ground managing individual projects, but you should be prepared to identify and implement ways to improve our hiring and recruitment processes overall.
• Strong communication skills.
• Mission alignment. You believe in the importance of nonprofit investigative journalism and can communicate as a credible representative of our organization.
• It would be a plus to have a keen understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with building and supporting a mission-driven staff.
• Past experience working in a newsroom strongly preferred.
This position is full time, includes benefits and is based in New York City, with work occurring during typical weekday business hours. One or two days per week of in-office work may be required. Applicants must be eligible to work in the US
