Job Description
The E.W. Scripps Company, an enterprise media company, is seeking a Senior Counsel, Employment. The purpose of this role is to provide guidance and strategic support to human resources and senior management on all aspects of employment and labor law matters and related litigation. This person will provide practical and strategic legal counsel to HR professionals on employment law-related matters, including compliance with federal, state and local employment laws, to ensure the company's activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations. This position reports to the SVP, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Ethics Officer. This position is in Cincinnati, OH.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
• Provide counsel to human resources on federal and multi-state employment law matters including hiring practices, pay, discipline, benefits, leave and workplace accommodations, workplace safety, unemployment, workers' compensation, internal investigations and terminations.
• Draft, review, and provide counsel on the engagement of independent contractors and temporary employees across the enterprise. Develop, implement, and administer processes for same.
• Identify trends and employment issues facing the business and design the legal strategy to address those issues.
• Provide advice and support with respect to employee benefits, including health and welfare plans.
• Partner with human resources and management to improve investigatory processes and outcomes and assist with investigating or managing investigations.
• Provide legal advice and support on traditional labor matters, including negotiating labor agreements.
• Investigate and respond to employee concerns, attorney demand letters, EEOC or other administrative charges and other similar issues
• Provide legal advice regarding draft/review of employment policies and procedures and training, and employment-related agreements to ensure they are compliant with law and consistent with company standards.
• Conduct or assist with providing training to human resources, management and other stakeholders on labor and employment law compliance.
• Direct the relationship with outside counsel on employment litigation, including assessing best case strategy, and the feasibility of settlement, and serve as liaison for discovery, investigations, and other litigation tasks.
• Remain abreast of employment-related legislation and significant court decisions and recommend policy and procedure modifications to human resources and management based on changes in the law.
• When duties permit, assist in-house colleagues with overflow work on employment law matters.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA accredited law school required
• Generally, 10+ years of employment law experience with a focus on employment litigation, employment contracts, and representing clients before administrative agencies in employment law and related claims preferred
• Prior experience working with and advising human resources and senior management on federal, state, and local employment law issues, employee relations, benefits and compliance preferred
• Prior experience successfully representing employers in employment-related litigation and mediation preferred
• Licensed to practice law in Ohio required for continued employment

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
• Sound knowledge of the various national and state laws that impact employment including ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, Worker's Compensation, and other employment-related laws
• Sound knowledge of employment law
• Excellent judgment and ability to provide practical advice on legal risks in a business context
• Ability to handle and strategically prioritize numerous projects in a fast-paced business environment
• Ability to establish strong professional relationships and credibility with internal clients, management, and legal colleagues
• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills
• Strong attention to detail
