Managing Editor, Penguin Young Readers (Open to Remote)

Managing Editorial at Penguin Random House seeks a Managing Editor to work closely with the Penguin Young Readers trade division. An industry leader in publishing a variety of children's book formats, including picture books, board books, middle-grade, young adult, and graphic novels, including Sabaa Tahir, Matt de la Peña, Melissa de la Cruz, Jan Brett, and Renée Ahdieh. The Managing Editor will oversee the publication of over 150 titles annually and feel confident working on a collaborative team in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.

The Managing Editorial Team for Penguin Young Readers manages the bookmaking process of all mass-market, trade paperback, and hardcover books for a diverse set of imprints. This role involves
overseeing schedules and logistics from manuscript transmittal to final book files and managing the ancillary materials for sales and marketing.
Our ideal candidate is highly motivated and enthusiastic about publishing. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who loves books of all types and is invested in the process of bringing them to a wide readership, has strong writing and analytical skills, communicates clearly , is comfortable asking for help when needed, and wants to be an active participant on a collaborative team. You will be asked to handle the details of immediately urgent tasks, while also remembering to step back, consider the big picture, and adjust your strategy when needed.

The Role:
• Creating and managing the editorial, design, and production schedules for over 150 frontlist children's titles of various formats per year
• Running regular production status meetings with Editorial, Production Editorial, Design, and Production
• Following the digital workflow process to route all book components to Copyediting, Editorial, Design, and Production
• Overseeing title set-up and metadata maintenance in SAP
• Liaising with Marketing, Sales, Publicity, Subsidiary Rights, and Publishing Operations, particularly regarding requests for files and to coordinate special handling of metadata for occasional publicity announcements
• Facilitating the creation of digital ARCs and printed ARCs and F&Gs for Sales, Marketing, and Publicity
• Responsible for reprint schedules and file updates as needed
• Overseeing e-book conversion quality control
• Liaising with publishers to make imprint schedules for divisional meetings and deadlines such as Launch

The Essentials:
• A minimum of 3-4 years of managing editorial or related project management experience
• Exceptional attention to detail, the ability to prioritize, and strong follow-up skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and meet deadlines, take initiative, and problem-solve creatively
• A team player with the ability to build relationships with other departments. A collaborative spirit is essential
• Superb organizational and time management skills
• Outstanding ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
• Solutions-focused when met with challenges and can comfortably adapt to changes and anticipate needs when needed once familiar with the role
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and proofreading skills a plus
• Expertise with FileMaker Pro, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and/or SAP a plus

The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $72,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
