The Role

The Challenge:

The Video Algorithms team is looking for an experienced engineering leader and media expert who will drive strategy and lead projects in the area of Video Algorithm Systems. The team is at the heart of the business, and is responsible for providing solutions for each one of our business lines and consists of stellar engineers with diverse backgrounds in media processing, distributed systems and software engineering.

Along with its sister Video Algorithm Science subteam, the Systems team:
• Develops, owns, and operates software, libraries, services, and workflows for video inspection, encoding, and quality assessment for all Netflix products
• Works closely with partner Media Platform and Netflix Platform teams to innovate and improve efficient and performative media processing capabilities at Netflix
• Works closely with certification, client, data science and CDN teams to ensure the right deployment and deprecation strategies for the streaming encodes on the platform
• Works closely with the various pipeline teams to ensure workflows and features for product and innovation requirements are productized and operationalized efficiently

What you'll do:
• Team Leadership: You will lead a team of high caliber software engineers who have strong media expertise. You will foster an inclusive team culture. You will empower, challenge and coach team members to help grow their impact.
• Product Leadership, Technical Vision and Strategy: You will evaluate technology and architecture choices on an ongoing basis, taking into account the scale of Netflix streaming and the rapidly evolving demands of our business.
• Collaborative Execution: You will define and execute the team's roadmap through close collaboration with the sister Video Algorithm Science and partner teams. You will effectively prioritize and organize work to find the best outcomes for team members and partners.
• As part of the Encoding Technologies leadership team, you will leverage your management and technical skills to help improve the larger Encoding Technologies organization.

About You:
• You have 3+ years of experience in hiring and managing high performance software engineering teams and have hands-on experience with building and operating media processing systems such as those for encoding or ML or LIVE ingest and delivery etc. and/or related technologies.
• You have excellent communication skills.
• You thrive in building strong partnerships with other leaders and teams.
• You are able to mentor and grow both early career talent as well as senior engineers of a highly heterogeneous team.
• You can work through ambiguity and show good judgment when evaluating the needs of the business.
Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $190,000 - $920,000
