Coordinator, Editorial (National Geographic)
The Editorial Coordinator plays an essential part in the creation of the world-class journalism for which National Geographic is known. Sitting on the Editorial Operations team, you will experience the workings of the entire editorial organization while providing the logistical and creative support to keep it running with an especially close working relationship with our Features department. The ideal candidate for this role has a passion for the possibilities of print and digital journalism and an unending curiosity both for how it's made and how it can be made better.
Responsibilities:
• Serve as a crucial link between the Editorial Operations and Features departments to provide organizational rigor to the creative process for the monthly National Geographic magazine and related products
• Attend weekly pitch meetings
• Maintain a record of stories that are moving through the pitch process
• Own the assignment tracker; record and track progress on writers' assignments; capture data (e.g., fees, deadlines) and report back on milestones in the feature development process
• Work closely with colleagues on the Editorial Operations team to maintain the editorial schedule and follow up on the status of article creation
• Schedule all production meetings to ensure that team members are available and prepared and that meetings occur by their appointed time on the production calendar
• Follow up with colleagues to ensure production deadlines are being hit
• Depending on the successful candidate, growth opportunities include writing front-of-book pages, vetting article ideas, and/or coordinating small projects
Qualifications:
• 1+ years of relevant work experience
• Exposure to print and/or digital publishing
• Adept on (or able to learn) Mac operating systems with basic software such as Word and Excel, and an ability to learn new software platforms
• A highly meticulous, self-motivated personality that enjoys organizing processes and making them better
• Comfort liaising with colleagues across the editorial division
• Passion for journalism and telling stories about the wonder of our world
• Interest in the core mission of National Geographic and its content areas (science, nature, wildlife, conservation, culture, human health and innovation, archaeology, adventure)
Preferred Qualification:
• 1+ years of work experience (including internships) in a publishing environment such as a newspaper, magazine, or website
Required Education:
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
Preferred Education:
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communication, or another department with an emphasis on writing
The hiring range for this position in Washington, DC is $53,300.00 to $71,300.00 per year based on a 40 hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
