Job Title: Assistant Grounds Supervisor
Department: Ballpark Operations
Reports To: Head Groundskeeper
FLSA: Salary / Non-Exempt
Job Purpose:
This full-time position exists to assist with the oversight of the playing surfaces and grounds of Great American Ballpark and the Reds Youth Academy. The responsibilities will include, but not limited to, the supervision and maintenance of the fields and grounds, including the direct supervision of the ''Fielders'' operation. This will also involve the coordination and management of baseball games, events, and other non-baseball activations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintain and prepare all grass and artificial turf surfaces to be safe and kept in such a manner as to meet or exceed all MLB and industry guidelines and internal expectations.
• Maintain all grounds to be aesthetically pleasing and safe for the general public.
• Mark athletic fields and prepare dirt and artificial infield surfaces.
• Maintain, repair, and operate sprinkler and irrigation systems, including controls and valves.
• Apply pesticides and fertilizers (as permissible under law); spread mulch and decorative ground cover.
• Must possess (or quickly acquire) a State of Ohio pesticides & fertilizer spraying license.
• Knowledge and successful experience of certain equipment that includes vehicles, trailers, and small engine machinery.
• Adhere to budgetary guidelines.
• Be compliant with all MLB and Reds employee policies and procedures while working.
• Work in such a manner in which aligns with all OHSA and other safety measures.
• Be customer focused, working in a manner that treats all internal and external constituents professionally and with respect.
• Assists with managing the daily operations to ensure efficient and effective crew performance.
• Delegate tasks and responsibilities, ensuring proper workload distribution.
• Manage seasonal ''Fielders'' (Ballboys & Ballgirls).
• Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Experience, Education and Licensure:
• Associate degree in Turf Management (or equivalent) required.
• Bachelor's degree in Turf Management (or equivalent) preferred.
• Horticulture (or Plant Science) required.
• 2 years of experience maintaining baseball/softball fields, preferably in professional or collegiate Division I level.
• Ability to obtain a pesticide applicator's license in the State of Ohio within 60 days of hire.
• Valid driver's license required.
• General mechanics skills preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Extensive knowledge of and experience performing all aspects of competitive baseball and softball field preparation.
• Excellent customer service skills, especially in responding to requests and relaying needs, field concerns, and weather reports to user groups and employees.
• To establish workload priorities and actively delegate to seasonal staff.
• To work independently or alone at times with minimal supervision.
• Inspect own work for accuracy.
• Ability to work effectively with other employees, contractors, and staff by using excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to respond with a sense of urgency and work effectively and productively.
• Ability to respond to daily pressure to meet deadlines and to handle the adjustment of plans to accommodate schedule flexibility that arises with event scheduling.
• Willingness to learn new methods, processes, and policies.
• Must comply with all safety rules, policies, and procedures, including biohazard and other regulatory requirements.
Special Requirement:
Must be physically capable of working extended hours and in variable weather conditions.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Sprinkler and irrigation systems; lawn mowers, trailers, motor vehicles, drag machines, small engine equipment, power tools, hand tools, computer, cellular telephone, mobile radio.
Physical Demands:
Must have a willingness to work a variable schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays especially during spring, summer, and fall seasons. The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation will be made as required under law to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work is performed primarily in outdoor settings. Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry 50lbs. on a regular basis.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee typically works outside in variable weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration; The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
