Job Description

Program Duration: Summer / Fall Semester

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the role and responsibilities of a producer/songwriter manager.
  • Develop essential skills in artist development, marketing, operations, and negotiation.
  • Learn how to navigate the music industry ecosystem, including relationships with record labels, law offices, and publishers.
  • Understand the legalities of music contracts and copyright law.
  • Gain practical experience by assisting a professional music manager with day-to-day tasks.
  • Develop strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.


Curriculum Components:

  • Orientation:
    • Introduction to the music industry and the role of a music manager.
    • Overview of the internship program and expectations.
    • Introduction to content management systems (Disco, Monday, G-Suite, etc )
  • Development:
    • Artist evaluation and selection process.
    • Developing an artist's vision, brand, and creative direction.
    • Assisting with songwriting, recording, and production.
  • Business Affairs:
    • Introduction to music contracts (recording, publishing, management).
    • Understanding artist royalties and revenue streams.
    • Negotiation strategies for deals and agreements.
  • Internship Project (throughout program):
    • Students will work on a project related to music management, chosen in consultation with the internship supervisor and school advisor.
    • Project presentations and final reports will showcase learned skills.
  • Key Responsibilities
    • Researching and scouting of unsigned Artists/Writers/Producer
    • Pitching signings in weekly meetings
    • Playlisting and File Organization
    • Additional operational tasks for the management team


Assessment:

  • Weekly reflection sessions discussing key learnings and challenges.
  • Midterm and final evaluations by the internship supervisor.
  • Internship project presentation.


Additional Considerations:

  • Introductions to industry professionals (artists, managers, lawyers).
  • Field trips to music venues, recording studios, or industry events.
  • Networking opportunities with music industry professionals
