Job Summary/Description:
WVIR-TV in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a Meteorologist to join our team. The ideal candidate will present a professional image and possess a strong knowledge of meteorology. This individual will represent the First Alert Brand and deliver precise forecasts across all platforms, including television, social media, and digital formats. 29News is the most award-winning TV news operation in the state and plays much bigger than our market size. We're looking to hire smart, hard-working team players.
We seek an ideal candidate with a degree in meteorology and on-air reporting experience. The candidate should be able to break down complex weather data into easy-to-understand broadcasts, online weathercasts, written stories, and multimedia content for digital platforms.
Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Analyze weather data and prepare detailed and engaging weather forecasts.
- Generate creative and engaging, content-driven live shots.
- Familiarity with the WSI weather system and software is a plus.
- Ability to handle long-form severe weather or event coverage, solo or in a team setting, both in the studio and the field.
- Report on environmental, weather, and climate topics throughout the week, including live field reports.
- Multi-task effectively, manage breaking weather events, and adapt to rapidly changing developments.
- Flexibility to cover other meteorologists' shifts as assigned, especially during severe weather or events.
- Post daily stories on our digital platforms and social media, including online weather discussions that explain complex weather phenomena in an easy-to-understand format.
- Engage actively with viewers on the station's social media platforms and respond to inquiries.
- Represent WVIR at community and station-sponsored events, including school presentations and station tours.
- Record short, daily weathercasts for radio partners.
- Collaborate closely with the Chief Meteorologist, news management, photographers, and newscast producers to deliver exceptional weather coverage and regular reporting.
This full-time position requires schedule flexibility to meet the department's needs.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related field
- At least two years of experience in broadcast and multimedia news content creation
- Proficient in writing for both broadcast news and digital platforms
- Ability to visualize and create weather graphics
- Strong understanding of journalistic ethics
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record
- Willing and able to work in extreme weather conditions while reporting on breaking weather events
