WHAS11, the TEGNA-owned ABC affiliate in Louisville, Kentucky is looking for a dynamic and engaging Chief Meteorologist to lead our team. The ideal candidate thrives in sustained severe weather coverage during major events, while still being able to tell a compelling weather story even on bright sunny days. The key responsibility is to oversee our weather team and be responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of weather information. The role requires expertise in meteorology, strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate complex weather information in a clear and concise manner. You will be an integral part of severe weather coverage, and reaching our consumers not only on TV, but online and on social media. The Chief Meteorologist needs to embrace new technology and be willing to explore new ways to present the weather story and will be a key leader in promoting community involvement. This position reports to the News Director.
Responsibilities:
• Works with the News Director to create and implement strategic direction for the weather
• Supervises the weather team, including all scheduling
• Assists News Director with recruiting and hiring for the weather team
• Coach and mentors team with regular feedback
• Works with the News Director and News Managers to develop plans for severe weather coverage
• Leads coordination and implementation of technological advances related to graphics
• Builds partnerships as required
• Participates in community outreach efforts including live shots and station appearances as required
• Builds weather forecasts – produces computer form graphics
• Keeps up-to-date on the latest weather data gathering/delivery trends
• Uses creativity in pitching, shooting, writing and editing stories
• Writes and posts stories online, mobile and social media platforms
• Must hit set goals for engagement with audiences
Requirements:
• BA/BS degree in Meteorology, Geoscience or Atmospheric Science
• Minimum 5-7 YEARS on-air meteorology experience required with a demonstrated ability to provide accurate and reliable forecasts in a professional broadcasting environment
• Knowledge of WSI necessary
• Certification from recognized meteorological organizations is desired
• Be proficient at posting content to various websites and social media; computer literacy required, including weather and newsroom computer systems
• Be available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, and fill-in when necessary
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment
