Job Summary/Description:
WEAU 13 News, the Gray Media-owned, NBC affiliate in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is seeking a Chief Engineer/IT Manager to work in a modern broadcast facility. The successful candidate will be able to combine solid leadership with a hands-on approach and broadcast engineering and IT management skills for a dominant full-power television station in the Eau Claire Wisconsin area.
The ability to oversee and interact with IT-based workflow in an automated environment and digital transmitter experience is important. Good communication skills in a fast-paced news environment are essential.
Our Chief Engineer will be responsible for quality control and FCC compliance of WEAU's transmissions, for all the technical facilities, and for building and grounds maintenance at the studio and transmitter sites. The Chief Engineer is also responsible for WEAU's IT infrastructure and for the training and supervision of the Engineering/IT department staff.
Duties/Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to) the following:
• Supervises all personnel in the Engineering/IT Department.
• Schedules department employees.
• Hires and oversees training and work of employees.
• Assists and supervises engineering/ IT employees in their work.
• Ensures that all equipment stays within FCC specifications.
• Monitors our signal to ensure signal quality and FCC compliance.
• Maintains station operating logs for FCC and FAA compliance.
• Answers emergency calls regarding technical problems at all hours of the day and night.
• Supervises or performs proper maintenance of all buildings and grounds.
• Supervises or performs maintenance or repair of broadcast transmitters.
• Supervises or performs maintenance or repair of broadcast and IT systems.
• Plans and supervises regular inspections and maintenance of our broadcast towers.
• Plans and supervises projects to install new or replacement systems.
• Works closely with the General Manager and corporate leadership to implement new technologies and technical infrastructure for the station.
• Plans and budgets for all future purchases of equipment to keep us competitive in our market and industry.
• Plans and budgets for all maintenance, repair, and operating costs.
• Purchases parts and supplies for equipment, buildings, and grounds.
• Documents broadcast and IT wiring throughout the facilities.
Qualifications/Requirements:
A strong candidate will possess the following:
• An associate's degree in electronics technology or an IT field is preferred but is not required.
• A valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
• Commanding knowledge of video and audio equipment and techniques.
• Commanding knowledge of Windows operating systems and network management.
• Familiarity with networking routing and IP addressing.
• Strong leadership skills and ability to operate in high-pressure situations.
• Ability to learn and adapt quickly to all work situations.
• Good or corrected vision and hearing.
• The ability to climb ladders, and lift and move heavy objects.
• The availability to provide on-call services 24-7.
• Professional, communicative, highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, and focused individual traits.
