Job Description
WCYB News 5 (NBC) in the scenic Tri-Cities region of Virginia/Tennessee has an immediate opening for a dedicated, experienced, and motivated Assistant News Director. This position oversees production of our daily newscasts, digital platforms, and social media content.

You will work closely with the other producers, reporters, anchors, and content center managers on daily news content and coverage. The ideal candidate must be proficient in creative writing, copy editing, enterprising stories, and be committed to managing compelling newscasts. This role will include planning and execution of our digital and social media strategies. You must be able to multi-task, work well under tight deadline pressure, and have an eye for detail. The Assistant News Director works with the News Director and other managers to establish our content center goals and strives to develop and further the brand of our newscasts. Our winning candidate will be someone who embraces digital platforms and knows how to consistently engage with our audience. As a content center leader, the Assistant News Director will help coach and mentor new hires, as well as existing staff. You will promote a positive team-oriented environment, and lead by example. Please note this position will require you to work evening hours on a regular basis and function as a rotating on-call manager on certain weekends and holidays.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Oversee newscasts, script reviews of producers and reporters for assigned newscasts
• Aggressively lead breaking news and severe weather coverage on all platforms
• Work closely with the News Director to carry out news philosophy and content center culture
• Assist with creating content that alerts, protects, and empowers our viewers on all platforms
• Review daily newscasts to ensure quality control and brand compliance
• Identify and incorporate showcasing elements in the daily newscasts
• Planning and overseeing continuity into upcoming newscasts
• Must be willing to fill in as a newscast producer, as needed
• Assist with scheduling content center staff

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field
• Sharp video shooting and editing skills
• Experience with iNews, AVID, and Xpression applications
• Must have a working knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws
• Exceptional written communication skills using a conversational writing style
• Ability to plan and adjust staffing during breaking news
• Great people skills with an emphasis on coaching, motivating, and mentoring
• Experience as a news manager or supervisor
