Broadcast Engineer, Field Engineering (News & Sports)
The Broadcast & IT Field Engineer is tasked with timely and professional support in a fast paced 24x7x365 field news gathering/production environment. Individuals in this job have demonstrated knowledge and competencies necessary to meet the full range of field engineering responsibilities. BIT Field Engineers are responsible for planning, planning and executing projects, live productions, and remotes as assigned to Domestic Field Engineering. He or she will primarily fill a general engineering support role or act as SME (Subject Matter Expert) for specific technology or systems. He or she will occasionally assume EIC (Engineer in Charge) roles, developing technology plans, organizing resources, providing technical oversight and guidance to staff, and ensuring suitable technical approaches are implemented on remotes. BIT Field Engineers are responsible for setting up and operating transmission links, setting up video streaming hardware, performing quality control and performing maintenance and repair of all television remote broadcast and/or satellite transmission; also responsible for receiving equipment as well as performing general hardware and software support for local computing equipment (laptops, LAN connection, digital phones) on site.
This position requires proficient electronics and IT support skills. Travel (typically Domestic, but occasionally international) is required, often with short notice and the ability to physically lift and move equipment weighing 50 pounds or more is necessary. Willingness to perform varied tasks when required on assignment to support the production. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations frequently encountered in field remote environments. Excellent customer service and communication skills (verbal, written) required.
This position will primarily provide field support but will also spend time in-house or assisting Broadcast and IT teams with project and maintenance work when not otherwise deployed in field.
Your New Responsibilities…
• Apply established processes and techniques to plan, lead and execute critical projects/remotes assigned to the department. As an EIC (Engineer in Charge), provide oversight and guidance to staff to ensure the suitable technical approach is implemented on projects/remotes. Produce project/remote documentation as specified by the department. Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and solving complex technical problems and be able work independently and autonomously in a team based environment. May be asked to coordinate technical teams for implementation of a remote installation, including but not limited to operation tasks/assignments in field for key clients/partners.
• Install, operate, and support the department's remote transmission and production equipment: SNG / newsgathering vehicles, portable satellite systems, microwave systems, MIMO /Mesh radios, communications equipment and HD production equipment. Perform quality control and perform maintenance and repair of all television remote broadcast and/or satellite transmission and receive equipment as well as perform general hardware and software support for local computing equipment (laptops, LAN connection, digital phones). Perform local in-shop maintenance and repair: Maintain and support field engineering equipment and field production crew gear. Package, wire, configure, and test new equipment. Receive, inventory, and QC equipment to ensure readiness for deployments. Coordinate technical installation with vendors and/or production teams.
• Perform 24x7x365 technical support for critical/on-air production systems. Ability to back-up or assist other support groups and clients for non-critical systems and IT/PC gear, including installation, problem correction, removal/replacement, or other tasks as necessary to ensure continuation of customer work productivity and/or on-air transmission.
• Participate on technology design, installation, and integration projects with complex, leading-edge technology in an increasingly broadcast IP and IT centric environment. This includes broadcast and server-based systems, data networking (e.g., routers, switches) and other comparable equipment.
• Document quality standards, system anomalies, operational procedures, reference materials, and project work. Use of 1) AutoCAD & Microsoft Visio for system documentation and 2) ITSM ticketing tool to log incidents/requests. Ensure sufficient inventory of parts and technology supplies, working with procurement and asset management teams to order and track inventory.
Qualifications & Experience…
• Typically 4 or more years of experience in radio and/or in television, including troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of TV, radio equipment, IT systems, satellite, production servers and studio systems; IP streaming systems, file ingest systems and quality control.
• Multi-cameras field-based production experience
• Ideal experience would include strong operational skills on a broad range of television remote broadcast and production equipment such as: SNG satellite uplink/downlink equipment, microwave, video encoding, ENG/Studio cameras and support equipment, A/V routers and infrastructure, video switchers, audio mixers, media decks, NLE edit systems and storage devices, fiber optic links, signal processing and transcoding devices, production communications (intercom) and computer systems/ IT networks architecture
• Proficiency with MS Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, etc.)
Educational Requirements…
• 4 year technical degree, preferably in electronics (or equivalent education/experience/training)
• Demonstrated knowledge of computer and data networking hardware and applications to ensure complete technical support in the field.
