Job Description
WRMD Telemundo 49 in Tampa, FL seeks a Managing Editor who will be responsible for overseeing the editorial content and news gathering. We are looking for a transformational leader who can successfully merge the editorial operations into one cohesive unit while crafting and executing a strategic vision.
Job Duties
• Oversee short-and long-term planning for content, both breaking news, and enterprise, and drive team coverage of big breaking stories and severe weather.
• Coordinate breaking news coverage and allocation of resources.
• Enterprise strong, unique local content and meet deadlines.
• Communicate clear expectations for quality content and the needs of both audiences across all platforms.
• Directly oversee the daily assignments of a team of Assignment Desk and Photographers.
• Motivate, coach, develop and keep staff focused to ensure excellent performance.
• Create development plans to help staff embrace strengths/challenges to share and grow their abilities.
• Help guide news staff in journalism best practices and content showcasing on all platforms.
• Embrace diversity of thought in story selection and execution.
• Work together with the News Director and Executive Producer to hold staff accountable for content that is balanced, fair, accurate and complete, incorporating where appropriate a diverse range of sources.
• Work directly with the Telemundo Orlando team to ensure a strategic distribution plan for the region.
• Keep informed the Telemundo Station Group and NBC Local about the daily Multiplatform planning of the station.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or related broadcast field or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in newsgathering, news production and/or news operations.
• Must be able to speak, read and write fluently in Spanish and must be able to speak, read and understand English.
• 2 to 5 years producer experience or writing / editing.
• Excellent news judgment, creative ideas and writing skills a must.
• Must have leadership qualities, be detail oriented, organized and able to handle intense deadline pressure.
• Must be willing to work in Tampa, FL and travel as needed for special assignments.
• Must be willing to work long hours, varying shifts (including nights and weekends) and report to work in emergencies depending upon news coverage when necessary.
• Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
• Must be 18 years or greater.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
Desired Qualifications:
• Experience in both general and Spanish language TV Markets.
• Knowledge in Tampa DMA to provide team's guidance on hyperlocal community stories.
• Take an active role in selecting the stories of the day – come up with story ideas that reporters can turn in one day, create producer driven content to enhance our coverage of the big story and other stories that appear in the newscast.
• Anticipate problems and address them throughout the course of the shift, eliminate all factual/spelling/other errors that appear in the show. If a problem arises, address it immediately.
• Bring creativity into every aspect of the newscast, use the Telemundo arsenal of tools and equipment to provide the most current information that is geographically diverse and maximizes viewer benefits.
