The primary responsibility of the Assistant Editor is to ensure that the strategic vision of a project, as approved in pub board, is carried through to publication. The Assistant Editor will report into the Associate Director of Development and will work closely with the Adams Media acquisitions and design teams; the Copy Chief; copyeditors and proofreaders; and outside authors.

The Assistant Editor will project manage 12+ projects/year from the author's delivery of the 50% submission all the way to press. As part of this process, the Assistant Editor will:
• Present a well-thought out and comprehensive development plan for all assigned projects.
• Revise, rewrite, and/or hone manuscripts for publication, carrying forward the publisher and acquisition editor's vision of the book through all steps of the development process.
• Assist in the creation of nonbook products and repurposed book projects.
• Review copyedited manuscripts and galley PDFs.
• Coordinate image creation and placement for art-heavy titles.
• Engage with content in an online-based Content Management System

The Assistant Editor will not be responsible for pursuing potential authors or acquiring manuscripts.

Applicant must have:
• 1–2 years relevant publishing experience, including some substantive developmental editing experience.
• Exceptional writing skills, including the ability to rewrite text to improve clarity and readability while keeping a project's tone, organization, and intended audience front of mind.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word
• Excellent organizational, time-management, and project-management skills
• Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills
• Ability to balance a variety of responsibilities/projects and manage time independently to meet deadlines
• Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and autonomously; must be able to collaborate and resolve issues

The ideal candidate is someone who has previously worked in the publishing industry and has some real-world developmental editing experience (possibly an Editorial Assistant who is looking to take the next step forward in their career). This person will be an excellent writer and creative thinker who is self-motivated, independent, and excited about actively contributing to Adams's small and highly collaborative Editorial team.
