Director, Newsroom AI (Artificial Intelligence)

The E.W Scripps Company is seeking a Director, Newsroom AI. In this new role this individual will lead the artificial intelligence strategy for Scripps newsrooms. As a senior editorial leader, the Director of Newsroom AI will lead the development and implementation of enterprise AI strategy for news - in collaboration with other senior leaders - to enhance and streamline workflows, improve content delivery and amplify Scripps journalism's unique value proposition.

This position is onsite and can be based out of any Scripps location.

What You'll Do:
• Collaborate with newsroom leaders to identify opportunities for AI integration that enhances reporting quality, efficiency, and audience engagement.
• Collaborate and project manage with partners in IT, Engineering and Product to development and roll out vetted newsroom solutions.
• Lead in strategic visioning for the role of artificial intelligence in Scripps newsrooms.
• Ensure all newsroom AI implementations uphold journalistic integrity, industry ethical standards, accuracy, and fairness.
• Collaborate with senior editorial leaders in local and national media to identify and prioritize workflow pain points.
• Lead training programs for newsroom staff on AI technologies and tools, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
• Partner with product, development and engineering teams to prototype AI-based features and products to better serve Scripps audiences and/or streamline workflows.
• Be current on AI research and development, and serve in a visible leadership role to strengthen internal competency and position The E.W. Scripps Company as an ethical and innovative thought leader on generative AI in the newsroom.
• Develop and manage the budget for newsroom AI projects, ensuring efficient use of resources.

What You'll Need:
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Journalism, or a related field preferred
• Generally, 3+ years proven experience in AI strategy and implementation, preferably within a newsroom or media environment
• Strong understanding of journalistic principles and ethics

What You'll Bring:
• Front-end web development skills to collaborate with engineers on the team
• Experience with quantitative user research and analysis, in addition to qualitative research
• Experience designing bots and conversational interfaces
• Experience with AI technologies relevant to content creation, data analysis, and machine learning
• Exceptional leadership and communication skills, capable of bridging technical and non-technical teams
• Demonstrated ability to innovate and think strategically about how AI can solve complex problems in journalism
