Job Description
The Conservatory of Theater Arts at Purchase College seeks a Prop Shop Supervisor. Duties and responsibilities include supervision of Prop Shop activities with additional supervision of Scene Shop and Paint Shop activities as needed; management of Prop Shop resources including materials, tools, and stock. Through this supervision, the Prop Shop Supervisor ensures that the academic programs of the Conservatory and student training are supported. Because of the student-run nature of Purchase College’s Design/TechnologyBFA program, the Prop Shop Supervisor trains, advises, and provides guidance to students, including both those in props leadership positions and students who are new to props. The guidance provided by this staff member makes certain that projects move through the shops in a timely, safe, and efficient manner while maintaining high standards of construction quality. This guidance and support should help foster a creative learning environment in which student skills can expand and improve under the guidance of working professionals.
This position works a 10 month college year schedule. There is an additional $3,026 Location Pay.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree and experience working in a professional prop shop. Experience working in an academic theatre program is desirable. Experience in managing prop shop operations, including stock management experience is also desirable. Qualifications include depth of knowledge of props construction and related techniques, knowledge historical periods of furniture and décor, enthusiasm for working with students in a diverse college environment, and an ability to maintain high standards for shop safety and project quality while training and leading students through the props process.
Specifically, we seek a prop shop supervisor with expertise in woodworking including furniture building and repair; metalwork including welding and manipulation; sculpture and carving; moldmaking and casting; computer graphics including, but not limited to, drafting and photo manipulation, upholstery; hand and machine sewing, budgeting and estimating of both money and labor, and an understanding of the safe storage and use of theatrical weapons including firearms and edged weapons.
The position has a variable work schedule with some evenings and weekends required.
