Jr. Book Interior Designer, Penguin Random House (Open to Remote)

Book Interior Design at Penguin Random House seeks a Junior Designer to join the team at Penguin Publishing Group and a Junior Designer to join the team at Crown Publishing Group. Reporting to a senior member of the team, the Jr. Designer will support the team in day-to-day design duties and assist in the execution of all stages of interior book design for mass market, trade paperback, and hardcover titles. This role provides an opportunity to collaborate and work alongside a talented team of designers and book production experts.

In the Penguin Publishing Group, the Jr. Designer will work closely with a roster of bestselling and award-winning imprints, including Ace, Avery, Berkley, Dutton, Plume, Putnam, TarcherPerigee, and Tiny Reparations Books. The Penguin Publishing Group encompasses titles that entertain all audiences--whether that's the global franchises of Best Selling Authors, Tom Clancy and Lisa Scottoline, championing new nonfiction voices like Everything's Trash, But It's Okay by Phoebe Robinson, popular fiction titles like Book Lovers by Emily Henry and Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, life-changing books like Atomic Habits by James Clear or finding humor and whimsy in gift books like Tiny But Mighty, by Hannah Shaw.

In the Crown Publishing Group the Junior Designer will help produce eye-catching interiors for the preferred publisher of presidents and celebrities. Crown is renowned as the go-to publisher of narrative and idea-driven non-fiction. Crown and Crown Currency are responsible for some of the most high-profile publications of our time, including Michelle Obama's Becoming, Susan Cain's Quiet, Matthew McConaughey's Greenlights, Matthew Desmond's Evicted, Greg McKeon's Essentialism and Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile.

Creative and adaptable, this self-starter will be day one ready with the design skills to navigate through title application files (styled long documents in InDesign) as well as PDF files. Each imprint has their own style and focus requirements, but the candidate should have an aesthetic eye to create backlist conversion samples. The candidate should be equipped with a strong work ethic to learn and grow in all aspects of interior book design.
Our ideal candidate is highly motivated, enthusiastic about publishing, and enjoys reading broadly and often. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who loves books of all types and is invested in the process of bringing them to a wide readership, has strong writing and analytical skills, communicates clearly, is comfortable asking for help when needed, and wants to be an active participant on a collaborative team. If you can handle the details of immediately urgent tasks but also remember to step back, consider the big picture, and adjust your strategy when needed, you'll assume greater interior design responsibilities over time.

Applying for this role: For better consideration, please identify the publishing group you are most interested in being considered for in your cover letter. A resume and cover letter are required to be considered for the role.
