Editor, Ten Speed Press (Open to Remote)

Ten Speed Press is seeking a creative, entrepreneurial editor to join our team, to help us build on our success and grow our list of non-illustrated prescriptive nonfiction. The editor will acquire , edit and develop a nonfiction list
of 10 to 12 books per year. The Editor will distinguish bestseller potential by identifying , cultivating, and publishing new authors, as well as help to build upon the success of current authors and titles.  The Editor will work in collaboration and in regular communication with our design, production, marketing, and publicity teams, bringing our titles to market quickly and brilliantly. This is an excellent opportunity to establish and nurture relationships with authors, booksellers, reviewers, and others in the writing and publishing community.

Ten Speed's children's publishing program aims to publish diverse voices with an elevated aesthetic, fresh point of view, and crossover appeal to different age ranges, with a strong emphasis on illustrated nonfiction and a curated list of picture books, along with graphic novels for young adult and middle grade readers.

Primary responsibilities include:
• Generate new book ideas based on talent, market trends, and opportunity; prospect and develop new authors and collaborators
• Evaluate book proposals and research the efficacy, opportunity, distinctiveness, and risk of potential acquisitions, including running p&ls , pulling competitive titles, and creating title sheets
• Develop and nurture relationships with agents, including contract negotiations
• Engage and partner with authors to fully realize their vision, collaborating throughout the acquisition and production processes with them as well as with designers, art directors, and production teams
• Communicate complex production schedules, working with various stakeholders to problem solve in creative ways
• Collaborate with designers, art directors, and production teams, as well as with sales, publicity, and marketing teams, to publish and position books as efficiently and effectively as possible
• Represent the publisher, design, and production teams when working with the author, and represent the author when working with our publisher, design, and production teams

• Minimum 5 years' experience in publishing
• Experience in prescriptive nonfiction; experience working on full-color books or other content-rich media spaces that integrate text and visuals a plus
• A thorough understanding of the overall publishing process and a firm understanding of the financial aspects of trade book publishing
• Established contacts in the agent community
• Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to negotiate with authors and agents
• Proven ability to deliver timely , accurate work product and demonstrate good follow-up and follow-through
• Familiarity with popular and emerging social media platforms
• Direct experience taking multiple concurrent projects from conception to completion
• Strong record of meeting deadlines with effective organization and prioritization skills
• Diplomacy and sensitivity in handling delicate conversations with multiple parties within a collaborative environment

The Ten Speed Press office is located in Emeryville, California. This role is open to remote candidates.

The salary range for this position is $70,000-$72,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. Please include a cover letter with your resume.
