OVERVIEW
NPR is seeking a skilled and creative journalist to serve as Producer I/II or III for Weekend Edition and for the weekend version of Up First, NPR's daily news podcast. Weekends are special, and NPR's Weekend Edition digs into the news of the week with a distinctive, thoughtful approach. Plus, we make sure that each week we bring some whimsy, playfulness or just plain joy to our listeners!
Weekend Edition Producer I/II/III develops timely, original content for the upcoming shows and future shows and plays a leading role in shaping the show's coverage of news, both during the live broadcast and in the field. The ideal candidate for this position will believe deeply in the responsibility of public service journalism. They will be interested in news and eager to deliver the freshest, most important stories to listeners. They will be comfortable planning a reporting trip or a series, field recording under a range of conditions, structuring a radio piece, writing for the ear, and sound design and mixing - all while maintaining the highest standards of judgment and accuracy. They will be able to respond quickly during breaking news, plan and execute long-term projects and host remotes, and work closely with the show host and editorial and production staff. The Producer I/II/III will line produce as needed.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and will involve regular travel.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Tracks ongoing flow of news and consistently generates timely, news-focused and well-thought-out story/interview ideas, generating assignments for self and others
• Edits interviews and related continuity, with minimal editorial supervision
• Pitches, plans, produces host remotes, leading editorially in the field
• Rotates into line producer role for the on-air production of NPR programs, both regularly scheduled programs and special reports
• Responsible for quality of products, ensuring that all materials meet NPR standards and practices.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
• Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience
WORK LOCATION: This is an onsite role at our Washington, DC location with hybrid work permitted
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Producer I - At least four years' experience as a producer, reporter or editor
• Producer II- At least six years' experience as a producer, reporter or editor
• Producer III- At least eight years' experience as a producer, reporter or editor
• Producer I - At least one years' experience in editorial decision making
• Producer II- At least two years' experience in editorial decision making
• Producer III- At least four years' experience in editorial decision making
• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timelines, with changing priorities/conditions
• Understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
• Ability to relocate. In the future NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations, Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer
PREFERRED SKILLS
Producer I:
• Experience working on a live news program
• Knowledge of advanced audio production and mixing techniques
• Experience directing a live news magazine or broadcast special
• Problem solving skills
Producer II:
• Experience producing live and breaking coverage
• Experience producing feature stories that include ambient or natural sound, music and archival tape
• Radio broadcast production experience
Producer III:
• Experience assigning staff, especially under deadline pressure
• Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas, to assimilate and organize large amounts of information
This position is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA. The minimum annualized salary for this position is $102,500.
