Job Description
OVERVIEW

This role would work with Member Stations on story ideas, content and sharing methodology. The person would extend the shared services model established through the Collaborative Journalism Network, so that a journalist with specific expertise provides editing, field support, production, training and added capacity to stations. This could include partnering with other organizations involved in these efforts as well. They will develop, conceive and execute original visual content from pitch through publication with a sophisticated understanding of how to tailor visual narratives and storytelling for young and diverse audiences. This position will also develop a newsletter featuring visual work in public media.
This position may require working nights, weekends and holidays as needed. This position reports to the Director of NPR Visuals. This is a limited term position ends on 9/30/26
This is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.
RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with a group of member station editorial teams including visual journalists to develop, conceive and execute original visual content from pitch through publication with a sophisticated understanding of how to tailor storytelling for young and diverse audiences.
• Guides, supports and edits visual journalists at member stations as they produce photos and videos.
• Takes responsibility for more advanced photography tasks, where applicable, including many layers of coordination, logistics & travel, creativity, and sensitivity in the storytelling.
• Exercises judgment and discretion to hire freelancers for advanced assignments that include complex coordination, creativity, and sensitivity in the storytelling, subject to final sign off by their supervisor.
• Uphold the highest standards for the visual tone of our storytelling.
• Works with team members at NPR and member stations to develop plans for training.
• Develop, write and produce newsletter featuring visual work in public media.
• Help develop systems to strengthen long-term relationships between NPR Visuals and member stations.
• Creates and maintains workflow processes.
• Proficiency at editing and producing complex pieces.
• Collaborate with Visual producers to develop story ideas for visual story-telling platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
• Conceptualize and execute a variety of styles and formats of visual storytelling
• Edit and produce stories for NPR's Picture Show platform.
• Produce, shoot and/or edit photography and/or video for visual platforms, clearly communicating the vision, project goals, narrative scope and timeline for each production.
• Advanced knowledge of visual and streaming platforms, accompanying formats and best practices.
• Research story ideas and fact check supporting materials maintaining NPR editorial and ethical guidelines.
• Additional duties as assigned by your manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• At least 7 years of photographic and/or video storytelling experience, preferably with a major network or newsroom, studio or creative agency.
• Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud programs related to video and photo design. (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere)
• Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities/conditions.
• Demonstrated commitment to increasing audience diversity.
• Be well versed in copyright and ethical journalism practices
• Excellent communication and writing skills.
• Interest and experience with collaboration involving multiple teams.
• Ability to work independently and with members of a cooperative team.
• Strong verbal communication skills.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
• Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with a specialization in film, video, media production, photography or journalism preferred
WORK LOCATION
• On-site: This is an on-site role based in Washington, DC .
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Thorough knowledge of online video, photography, writing and audio production.
• Experience and skill with digital publishing software.
JOB TYPE
• This is a full-time, limited term position.
COMPENSATION
Salary Range: The US based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $130,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPR's benefits options.
