Job Description
OVERVIEW

This editor is a member of the NPR Newsroom's overnight team. The editor works closely with the Morning Edition broadcast, reviewing and editing material from the broadcast that goes onto NPR.org. Primary responsibilities include collaborating with the Morning Edition team to adapt and update the ME broadcast rundown for NPR stations and for NPR.org. The editor reports to the Supervising Overnight Editor of the General Assignment Desk and they work closely overnight to make sure the Newsroom and Morning Edition are on top of the latest stories. They will regularly collaborate with various newsgathering teams and look for ways to spark signature NPR journalism from across our network.
The role requires impeccable news judgment as well as someone who can multitask effortlessly, and nurture and grow writers.
The editor will have to be able to act in the moment-on breaking news, working closely with the supervising editor of the General Assignment Desk and Morning Edition-all while keeping an eye on Chartbeat, Twitter, SnapMaps, Dataminr, Reddit, Crowdtangle, your own RSS feed, and/or other signals to ensure we are staying competitive and covering the right stories in the right way.
The editor needs to have good knowledge of how social media platforms work, how NPR works on them and know how to alert NPR's biggest stories, breaking and feature news.
A critical component of this role is how we present the stories we create on our homepage and social platforms. The editor for this role thinks holistically about content creation and curation. If you can think in multimedia ways, with an eye (and ear) for social-native storytelling, and if you are informed by data and analytics as one of the additional ways you think about stories, that's important.
The work hours will be Monday through Friday, 12am-8am ET.
This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.
