Editor II, Up First, Morning Edition - Temporary
OVERVIEW

Millions of listeners depend on Morning Edition and Up First to set the news agenda that starts their day. We deliver the latest international and national news stories paired with analysis to help put those headlines in context. Morning Edition is also a platform for accountability through interviews with government officials and decision makers who make or influence policy that affect peoples' lives. The show also features culture stories about music, movies and books that bring joy and provoke thoughtful conversations about who we are in this world.

The Overnight Up First Editor ensures the scripts and audio content for that day's podcast episode is the freshest, most relevant, accurate and engaging for listeners. This person writes scripts for the episode with the intent of maintaining the conversational nature of the podcast while delivering news and analysis that meets NPR's editorial and ethics standards. This includes fact-checking and correcting errors both in the written scripts and within audio and spoken word, too. The editor works in tandem with the Overnight Up First Producer to find, dub/record and pull relevant audio and sound to enhance the stories in the episode and improve the listening experience for audiences. This person collaborates with the Overnight Line Editor and Morning Edition management team to make decisions and execute changes and updates to the podcast so the episode is responsive to breaking news and story developments. The Overnight Up First Editor serves as the line editor for podcast hosts and reporters before and during the production of the episode. This person is responsible for editorial integrity and quality of Up First, ensuring that all materials meet NPR standards.

In addition, the Overnight Up First Editor ensures the final episode is published on all platforms. They copy edit and fact-check all written copy associated with the episode such as episode titles and summaries that are published on podcast platforms online. They also act as an accountability partner to the Overnight Up First Producer to ensure that underwriting with the episode is correctly included in the audio production and final product.

This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Reviews, edits and writes scripts and copy for accuracy, flow and to meet NPR editorial standards.
• Helps identify audio and sound to incorporate into the episode production.
• Monitors news headlines and stories as they develop and updates the show and scripts accordingly.
• Works in tandem with the Overnight Up First Producer to bring daily episodes of the podcast to final publication.
• Brief shows hosts and reporters ahead of live interviews and remains engaged during the conversation
• Builds episode materials such as digital copy and images needed for podcast publication
• Works with the Overnight Line Producer, Morning Edition managers and NPR network journalists including editors, reporters and deputy managing editors to keep the podcast at the sharp edge of evolving news stories
• Works with NPR's news desks, reporters, hosts and show team to update the podcast episode as needed
• Suggests guests for live interviews for news coverage plans, especially during breaking news situations and executes on coverage plans.
• Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• At least six years of experience as an editor, producer or reporter
• At least two years of editing experience including editorial decision making.
• At least four years of experience working in audio or radio production.
• Ability to work the required overnight shift, 11 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time
• A broad range and interest in national and international news.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Ability to work on site at NPR's Washington DC studio.
• Proficiency with producing and mixing audio on some type of digital audio workstation (i.e. Audition Audition, ProTools, etc.)
• Experience working within NPR's public radio member station network.
• Experience with the type of audio production protocols and systems used at NPR.
• Proficiency in another language other than English.
• Digital news production experience such as copy editing, social media production or other types of digital platform production skills.

REQUIRED SKILLS
• Excellent and efficient use of digital communication platforms such as email and instant messenger applications such as Slack, WhatsApp, etc.
• Expertise in news-writing techniques and styles such as AP Style.
• Strong oral communication skills.
• Problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to organize and disseminate information and to coordinate news coverage.
• Demonstrated ability and experience working quickly and efficiently under deadline.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience

WORK LOCATION
• Remote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.

JOB TYPE
• This is a temporary 3 + month full time position.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate: The US based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $50.48 - $52.88 per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
