OVERVIEW

INTRO TO POSITION

The ideal candidate for this Producer position on All Things Considered will have a background in audio news journalism, as well as a passion for meeting diverse audiences across platforms.

This Producer Plans and produces stories and program elements; rotates as assigned through all shifts, reports and writes original stories and story elements; creates multimedia content; acts as a decision-maker in look, feel, and sound of the program while undertaking complex daily and long-term projects.

This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assembles on-air materials prior to broadcast and direct pre-recorded elements as needed.
• Initiates, plans and produces program material for weekend shows, with minimal editorial supervision.
• With supervision, occasionally conceives and executes enterprise episodes of the Consider This podcast.
• Consistently generates timely and well thought-out story/interview ideas.
• Edits tape and related continuity, with minimal editorial supervision.
• Writes news and program copy, including drafts of hosts' leads and other production copy.
• Completes weekend segments that are unfinished from weekday staff.
• Maintains working knowledge of all the latest sound-gathering and filing technologies in use at NPR.
• Maintains internal relationships with program staff across all NPR platforms including broadcast, online, social media, reporters/editors contributing to daily program and departments providing support services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Expertise in producing broadcast shows and writing/editing copy under breaking news conditions.
• At least four years of radio production experience including experience on broadcast digital audio workstations (ie MTE/DAVID, Dalet, Adobe Audition, ProTools or similar)
• At least two years of experience in editorial decision making with demonstrated ability to exercise solid, independent news judgment.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts as assigned.
• Demonstrated ability to assimilate and organize large amounts of information
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes, with changing priorities/conditions.
• Familiarity with a range of subject areas such as world news, business, science, and arts.
• Demonstrated excellence in news writing and copy-editing, especially on deadline
• Understanding of journalistic ethics.
• Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
• Ability and willingness to travel
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Expertise in producing under breaking news conditions.
• Daily news experience
• Broadcast experience
• Experience in Digital Media, CMS

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience

WORK LOCATION
• On-site: This is an on-site role based in Washington, DC.

COMPENSATION

Hourly Rate: The US based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $42.06 per hour. The rate displayed reflects the maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
