  • Full Time
  • Mid (2-5 years) Experience
Job Description

The Hill, a division of Nexstar Media Group, is looking for an experienced reporter to join our team covering the House of Representatives.

This is a high-profile role covering the inner workings of the House Democrats and Republican leadership teams.

It's a broad beat that will encompass reporting on a wide range of policies. But at its heart, the beat is a political one focused on the personalities that lead the House and that battle for power and influence in the chamber. It's also a beat focused on the wielding and attainment of power.

You must have a keen political ear and eye for stories that will garner buzz and attention in Washington and beyond. An ability to work as part of a team, and to see news from all angles and not just from the House chamber, is also important.

You should excel at breaking down complex subjects into scannable stories that are easily read by busy people on the go, but also be ready to dive deep with longer form content as warranted.

Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to not be shy and to dive into building relationships with sources on Capitol Hill, from lawmakers and aides to Capitol police and other workers in the building, is a huge plus.

This is one of the best jobs in Washington, especially coming at a time when the battle to win the House majority is picking up steam with the midterms approaching.

Please upload your materials combined into one single document with as much of the following as possible: your updated resume, a brief cover letter explaining your interest and fit for the position, and your portfolio/clips or links to a few samples of your work. Completing these steps will ensure that you receive the highest consideration.

Ideal candidates will have these skills and qualifications:
• At least two years of experience in journalism
• Demonstrated strong writing and reporting skills
• Audience-first mindset, including familiarity with digital and social media
• Appetite to tell stories in novel ways to attract new and larger audiences
• Drive to get stories online in a timely fashion, without sacrificing quality
• Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and able to build relationships
• Highly resourceful team player, also able to be extremely effective independently
