Job Description
The Assistant Chief Engineer supports the daily operations of the Engineering Department and ensures the maintenance and reliability of all broadcast technology and equipment at the station and transmitter sites.
• Support the Chief Engineer in managing all aspects of the Engineering Department.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all broadcast technology and equipment at the station and transmitter sites.
• Ensure station compliance with FCC rules and regulations, as well as local, state, and federal laws.
• Assist in planning, implementing, and maintaining technical infrastructure, including new technologies.
• Oversee engineering and technology capital projects within established budgets.
• Manage and coordinate fiber connectivity, production setups, A/V routing and patching, audio equipment, graphics systems, and editing systems.
• Evaluate, install, and maintain IT systems critical to station operations, including media workflows.
• Oversee and maintain the station's building infrastructure and vehicle fleet, including satellite and ENG trucks.
• Collaborate with vendors and contractors for maintenance, training, and technology upgrades.
• Ensure redundancy and reliability in critical systems for uninterrupted on-air operations.
• Serve as an operational and technical resource to station staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned by station leadership.
Requirements & Skills:
• Associate degree in Electronics, Communications, Broadcast Engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
• Minimum three years of experience in a television broadcast environment; experience with RF technology and IP-based workflows is strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with broadcast equipment, including routers, switchers, servers, transmitters, and fiber networks.
• Strong IT skills, including expertise in Windows, Linux, networking, and media storage systems.
• Familiarity with newsroom production systems and automation platforms.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with multiple departments.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask effectively, and meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in confined spaces when necessary.
• Flexibility to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs require.
