About this Role

The Netflix Legal and Public Policy team is a group of highly talented and experienced individuals who work closely with their business counterparts and governments to advance the strategic goals of the company. The team is perceived within Netflix as solutions-oriented and as a welcome part of Netflix's business team. The Manager, Public Policy - Japan will be a critical member of the Japanese Legal and Public Policy team and a meaningful fellow to the APAC Public Policy team, charged with further growing the Japanese market, specifically the market is the largest in the APAC region, creating Japanese language originals. The manager will be charged with developing and executing Netflix's public policy campaigning, advocacy and ally-building in Japan. The manager will also be a part of a diverse global public policy team, working across regions, product areas, and functions. You'll combine creativity and intellectual rigor with the organizational skills to manage various campaigns, projects and initiatives.

In this role, the manager will advocate for Netflix to bring external perspectives back into the company to inform our perception and direction. She/ He is passionate about the opportunity to shape the future of how we create content and entertainment for everyone and deliver Japanese contents to global audiences.

In this role, she/he will represent Netflix externally at the highest levels with government, regulators and third parties, and also become a member of
our stellar team in the Japanese office. You will be responsible for determining and managing our key policy campaigns in-country and also for coordinating with cross-functional peers locally and with colleagues across Netflix's global Public Policy organization. You will have strong organizational and planning skills and have a keen focus on getting things done. The successful candidate will be charged with building relationships with government officials, industry partners and civil society groups. This role will involve managing advocacy projects, research and writing of policy briefs, monitoring legislative and rule-making initiatives. An important aspect of the role is being able to advise the company on political matters in Japan, in particular, and build as well as manage the relationships with key political figures able to positively influence the business environment in which Netflix will operate.

The prospective manager will manage our Japanese policy advocacy, campaigns and ally-building.

The primary area of focus will include but not be limited to:
- Represent Netflix at the highest levels of policy-making and Government in Japan.
- Advising the company on political matters in the region
- Develop and lead public policy advocacy and campaigns across the full range of policy areas that impact Netflix (ex. Audiovisual Media Law, Telecommunications, E-Commerce, Privacy, Data Security, Copyright and other IP issues)
- Build a network of trade associations, industry partners, non-profit groups and others to support policies that will help create/maintain Netflix positive environment.
- Built Netflix policy campaign strategy and delivers flawlessly to achieve our policy objectives.
- Ensure relevant and timely internal communications and information flow locally and vis-a-vis global colleagues.

In addition to the functional expertise and ability to lead strategically in Public Policy, she/he will also need to exemplify the qualities that lie at the core of our culture - qualities such as excellence, selflessness, honesty and impact, among others.

The successful candidate will have:
• at least 5 years of government or government relations experience related to Japan and substantial campaign experience, either working with a company, government, trade association or similar employer and have an excellent communication skill
• experience working with governmental entities and knowledge of Internet and technology issues is preferred, as is a background in telecoms/audiovisual media law or policy.
• excellent writing and oratorical skills in Japanese and English, and will be highly organized and solutions-oriented.

This position is based in Tokyo and will require international travel.
