Responsibilities
NBC News Digital is looking for an eager and driven digital journalist to join its platforms team in New York City. The associate platforms editor will work with other platforms editors to curate NBC News' owned and social platforms, write headlines and breaking news alerts, and distribute content to partners such as Apple News, Yahoo, and Flipboard.
The ideal candidate should be a news junkie who is passionate about digital journalism and media, and who wants to hone their craft with one of the best teams in the business. They'll have an opportunity to work on the biggest news stories as they happen, including the midterms and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and get experience in homepage and app editing, social media editing, and digital strategy in a national newsroom.
The role is best suited to someone who has some experience in a digital newsroom and is looking to find their professional footing. The ideal candidate will have an eye for a story, insatiable curiosity, and a willingness to learn. A strong interest in digital and mobile trends is a must.
Candidates should be comfortable working in a hybrid WFH environment and juggling the multitude of communication channels and large volume of comms that come with Slack, email and Teams meetings. Excellent communication skills are essential.
This is a full-time, 18-month project based in New York City. Candidates from around the country will be considered. This position is represented by the NewsGuild-CWA.
Key tasks
• Curate NBC News' owned and social platforms with a mix of breaking news, politics, enterprise reporting and video
• Write accurate and engaging copy, including headlines, alerts and social language
• Pitch stories to Apple News, Flipboard, etc
• Monitor real-time analytics
• Work with the photo team to illustrate stories on desktop and app
Qualifications/Requirements
1 or more years working as a homepage editor or social media editor at a digital news organization.
• Experience publishing in a CMS or in social distribution tools such as SocialFlow and True Anthem.
• A broad knowledge of current affairs, including politics, race, social justice, international affairs, pop culture and sports.
Experience multitasking during breaking news and meeting deadlines.
