Your impact:Biography.com covers the people you know through stories you don't. We produce digital and social content across a wide range of pillars including pop culture, true crime, history, sports, and innovators from every discipline.
Working with the guidance and supervision of the Biography.com Deputy Editor, the News and Culture Editor helps plan and create timely explainers and new profiles for Biography.com and other brands, as needed, in the Enthusiast and Wellness Group. The News and Culture Editor can formulate compelling pitches based on viral moments in the cultural zeitgeist, as well as upcoming movie, TV, and other media releases, then craft entertaining, factually impeccable articles and profiles that convey the excitement of being in the know about the most important people in current culture and historical figures with lasting impacts. The ideal editor can within minutes find the heart of the day's news, pinpoint the key players in relation to our existing database of 3,100-plus profiles, and explain must-know information to aid distribution across all our platforms.
What you'll do:
• Pitch and write explanatory articles that center celebrities, buzzworthy figures, or the real people portrayed in movies and on television to generate audience traction, primarily for Biography.com and all its platforms
• Pitch and write new profiles about cultural and historical figures that meet Biography.com's coverage criteria to best serve our audience and update existing profiles, as needed
• Enhance your work by incorporating existing content and utilizing SEO best practices
• Working with freelance contributors, manage the team's external fact-checking needs
• Use site analytics and SEO to constantly hone story angles, breadth, the content creation process, and display copy to reach team goals
• Keep a pulse on daily news, plus track upcoming cultural events and releases to spot coverage opportunities
• Work with the Biography.com Deputy Editor and fellow editorial team to hit all relevant metrics and goals
• Demonstrate an interest in sharpening your editing skills to eventually begin working with freelance writers, as assigned
Who you are:
• An excellent writer with knowledge of what makes a good story
• Have some experience editing other writers, or an interest in learning
• Obsessed with notable personalities, celebrities, historical figures, cultural icons-and explaining the importance of those people in clear, compelling, and simple yet detailed ways
• Overtly committed to factual accuracy
• Enjoy creating multiple pieces of content daily, in a high-cadence environment and a get-it-out-first deadline approach
• Comfortable producing content with digital-friendly language and that is optimized for SEO
• Relish working collaboratively with our experts and colleagues in data, visual, video, affiliate, and audience attraction teams
• Responsive to fast-changing metrics and goals
• Have at least 3 years of publishing experience, preferably in digital, newsletter, or social brands
This role requires the position to be located in Easton, PA with an in-office presence of 3 days a week.
The base salary for this role is between $62,310 to $69,000 annually. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
