KETV, the ABC affiliate in Omaha has an opening for someone who wants to win each day in the role of Evening Assignment Editor. The right candidate will take charge in breaking news and help assign field crews to their duties each night. Being the heartbeat of the newsroom, you will enjoy digging up enterprise news stories and working sources in the community to ensure Omaha's News Leader is in front of the top stories no matter the hour of the day. We are looking for someone who operates as a reporter and a leader in this role. You will report to the News Director.
Responsibilities
• Listen to multiple police, fire scanners and dispatch crews to breaking news-must have great ''scanner ears''
• Gather and organize press releases, emails, phone calls and viewer tips. Decide which will yield compelling content for newscasts
• Monitor multiple social media accounts to gather content and communicate with news makers; Set up interviews, confirm important stories
• Assist news management with content gathering and planning
• Assist producers, digital editors and reporters with story gathering
• Keep track of crews in the field, assign gear, cars, and communicate with them
• Furnish content and post it to all digital platforms
Requirements
• Experience listening to police scanners
• Can gather information from multiple sources simultaneously and quickly push it out to anchors, reporters, producers, and digital editors
• Experience with digital platforms, especially social media.
• Familiar with local newsgathering technology such as TVU, Satellite and microwave trucks
• Maintain professional working relationships with newsmakers
• Be able to remain calm and level-headed during breaking news situations
• Understanding of courts, legislative system a plus
• Willing to work a variety of shifts including weekends and nights
• Related military experience will be considered
• In-person attendance is required
