What We Do

Put your design skills to work at a cutting-edge company that challenges the norm. From character and level design to competitive gameplay and system design, help shape the future of interactive entertainment at Epic.

What You'll Do

Epic Games is looking for a Senior Technical Designer to join our team working on LEGO Fortnite. In this role, you'll work with a team of designers in order to create engaging scenarios and encounters that support a variety of systems, modes, and playstyles. As a Technical Designer, you'll play a focused role implementing the most technically complex design content that the scenario team designs. You'll also use your hands-on experience in implementation to inform choices about tech debt, new design creation, tools, and human processes in an environment that values your input and expects you to solve big problems that affect everyone on your design team.

In this role, you will
• Contribute and help guide the design, vision, and outcome for scenario content that supports broad systematic framework needs - new systems, world content, IP integrations, amplifying it, and bringing all elements together
• Guide systemic solutions that allow our procedural content generation to intelligently place encounters and adapt gameplay to procedural environments with the goal of creating multiplicatively infinite replayability
• Identify shortcomings in workflows you encounter and either fix them yourself, or refer them to the proper engineering resources
• Assess technical debt in the systems you touch, and take ownership over reducing or managing that debt
• Stay fully versed in the current and long-term design objectives of your design group, and represent those objectives in engineering discussions
• Make key UX decisions in how tools and workflows should function
• Set up reusable and generalizable systems with Unreal blueprints for your design group to use

What we're looking for
• Your primary skill set should be Technical Game System Design: data asset architecture; strong software architecture in Blueprints; algorithm efficiency and robustness; and impeccable ability to translate between engineers and designers
• Strong interest in survival and sandbox games with an understanding of what makes them work
• 3+ years experience in procedural content systems, with a strong ability to describe their rules at a systemic level
• A background in combat encounters, patrol markup, and AI hinting
• Solution-oriented problem solver who can react quickly to changing project needs and drive decisions

Note to Recruitment Agencies: Epic does not accept any unsolicited resumes or approaches from any unauthorized third party (including recruitment or placement agencies) (i.e., a third party with whom we do not have a negotiated and validly executed agreement). We will not pay any fees to any unauthorized third party. Further details on these matters can be found here.
