Job Description
ENGINEERING - EPIC GAMES SERVICES
What We Do
Driving the plug-in power behind Unreal Engine 5. We bridge connections for licensees and our own internal game teams to online services. This allows games like Fortnite to utilize a combination of platform online services as well as Epic's own online services to build cross-platform online features. Login, parties, voice chat, matchmaking, purchasing, cloud storage, and analytics are just a few examples of online features that our Online Game Services team helps games utilize.
What You'll Do
The Discovery team is responsible for powering the Discover section of Fortnite, surfacing experiences to players, driving engagement to first and third party creators, gating content for our younger audiences, and providing player gameplay statistics. As part of the Online org, we are working to bring new ways to surface content both for Fortnite as well as bring exciting features to other games via Epic Online Services (EOS) SDK offerings. As a Backend Engineer, you will craft highly available, high throughput, low latency services at Fortnite scale focused on the Discover ecosystem. Our highly collaborative environment focuses on quality, reliability, and usability. From design, implementation, and deployment, you'll be able to shape the services and features that drive the future of Discover in the Epic Games ecosystem.
In this role, you will
• Work with public cloud infrastructure like AWS to facilitate a fast-moving ecosystem, owning the entire lifecycle of services, including live operations and deployment while being flexible around the ambiguity of the problem space
• Collaborate effectively with other engineers, producers, product owners, cloud, QA, infrastructure and DevOps teammates in healthy ways to build and ship solutions
• Provide feedback and estimates on feature development (and other operational tasks) while owning the outcome/being accountable for the solutions built
• At Epic, engineers are empowered to get things done by assessing challenges, crafting solutions, and implementing them by writing distributed systems, primarily using Java, to handle large-scale challenges
What we're looking for
• 4+ years of software engineering experience in developing online systems, with a solid background in writing large-scale distributed systems and a proven track record of operating live services at scale
• Hands-on experience with Epic's tech stack, including Java, Spring, AWS, Redis, DynamoDB, message queues, and Terraform
• Extensive experience working collaboratively with a team of engineers to solve large and ambiguous problems, with excellent communication skills to provide, solicit, and accept feedback constructively
• A user-focused, friendly, pragmatic person with an innovative mindset, which are crucial traits for Epic's success and influences everything the company does
• Previous experience with backend game services is a plus
Note to Recruitment Agencies: Epic does not accept any unsolicited resumes or approaches from any unauthorized third party (including recruitment or placement agencies) (i.e., a third party with whom we do not have a negotiated and validly executed agreement). We will not pay any fees to any unauthorized third party. Further details on these matters can be found here.
