Overview
This position is located at Discovery's Global Center of Excellence for Indirect Taxes with the physical location in Warsaw, Poland. The person will support the VAT/GST compliance and reporting for assigned tax jurisdictions within EMEA and/or LATAM regions.
This role has a compliance focus but also has a strategic element which requires an individual with excellent communication, client management and partnering skills across different business functions. This is an IC manager role (no direct reports).
Also essential are flexibility and agility in order to adapt to a continually evolving business, common sense and the ability to work autonomously.
Discovery's Tax team is located in the US, UK, Poland, Netherlands, Singapore and India. This role will be located in Warsaw which is also the base for Discovery's European Finance team. The role will be within the wider Tax team and will report into the Global Indirect tax compliance and reporting lead who is located in Poland.
Responsibilities
• This role will be part of the Center of Excellence (COE) of indirect tax compliance specialists. This offers the suitable candidate the opportunity to work within a multinational environment across several regional territories and cooperating with our Co-Sourcing partner. In particular, the role will involve the following responsibilities
• Collating and downloading SAP data to prepare and support outsourced processes for the preparation of VAT returns.
• Performing quality controls, approving and paying VAT returns drafted by the co-sourcing partner
• Ensuring that internal and statutory timelines for VAT filing and payments are adhered to.
• Highlighting any potential VAT risks and/or opportunities identified through the VAT compliance process to Indirect tax leadership and performing defined actions to manage these opportunities and risks.
• Reconciling and clearing VAT general ledgers and ensuring integrity and accuracy of those accounts for management/tax authorities.
• Providing support to the indirect tax leadership in relation to queries/audits raised by tax authorities in the relevant territories.
• Engaging with external auditors for the provision of documentation and resolving queries.
• Identifying opportunities to optimize VAT compliance processes and controls and implementing process improvements
• Streamlining and updating policies, operating procedures and documentation as process changes occur.
• Assisting in implementing governments' digital tasks initiatives (eg SAF-T, e-invoicing etc.) when required.
• Providing review support to territories in which the VAT return process is managed locally.
• Coordinating and managing external advisors when required.
• Tax determination in SAP and related systems – changes, reviews, testing, approvals.
• Providing and maintaining VAT guidelines and training for GBS and other relevant Finance Teams.
• Supporting the business by providing the VAT technical guidance and onboarding new entities.
Qualifications
• Higher education (university degree) in finance, tax, accounting, economy or related
• 5 years plus experience within Indirect tax compliance across different tax jurisdictions
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail within a rapidly changing environment
• Excellent English writing and speaking skills (European languages will be a plus) with the ability to present complex subject matters clearly and succinctly.
• IT literate including knowledge of SAP or similar systems
• Shared Services Center/Center of Excellence experience is an additional asset.
• Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships and clearly communicate issues and solutions to multiple stakeholders.
• Level of supervision required: works independently as an expert. May manage projects/ processes within own area of expertise.
• Hands-on, pro-active and taking initiative.
• Problem solving: Uses own judgement based on existing procedures & policies to decide on appropriate action
• Knowledge sharing/ developing others: may provide training to lower-level jobs
