CNN's coverage of space and science is home to high-quality, cross-platform stories exploring the mysteries and wonders of our world and the cosmos beyond. We're searching for an Editor to be a key player in the ongoing growth and development of the Science section and related editorial products, including the Wonder Theory newsletter.
The Science Editor is responsible for commissioning, producing and promoting stories on fascinating discoveries, daring expeditions, breakthrough advancements and more to support the section's editorial output globally. They will help oversee and elevate the work of staff writers, freelancers, and other potential contributors to space and science coverage, and serve as a proponent for the sections' voice, outlook and editorial values, while simultaneously ensuring the team contributes to CNN's overall global audience and revenue goals.
The editor will work closely with, and report to, the Senior Science Editor. They will also help develop and nurture crucial relationships across the network, identifying key opportunities to collaborate and innovate. This position additionally may liaise with commercial and sales teams to support sponsorship and other business development opportunities while maintaining editorial independence and content that attracts audiences to CNN's platforms.
The person in this role should be a meticulous line editor with a knack for bringing clarity to complicated topics and writing headlines audiences can't resist. Someone with a true passion for the beat who is comfortable assessing scientific studies and has a basic understanding of the norms and parlance of space exploration would be particularly well-suited to this challenge. Composure and quick-thinking in breaking news are musts.
Your Role Accountabilities...
• Assign and edit news, enterprise and explainers, embracing a range of storytelling formats, photography and video to convey powerful narratives as well as maintain an effective SEO and evergreen strategy
• Ensure content adheres to the Science section's quality and reporting standards
• Execute on multifaceted, cross-departmental live coverage plans for big science news events
• Assist with coordinating and communicating short- and long-term Science coverage plans
• Monitor the performance of stories/videos/social initiatives, work to optimize content in real-time -and communicate learnings to the team
• Step into the Senior Editor's role when they are on PTO or focused on a large project to lead day-to-day coverage and oversight of space and science stories.
• Collaborate and consult with partners across CNN, external collaboraters and key contributors; establish strong relationships and regular communication with other editorial leaders, producers and programmers
• Contribute to execution and development of Wonder Theory newsletter and brand
• Achieve established editorial goals and deadlines and mentor others to do the same
Qualifications & Experience...
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communication or related discipline or equivalent work experience
• 5-8+ years' experience in digital news production with a focus on feature content (some experience working with science, climate, health coverage preferred)
• 3+ years' experience supervising and mentoring digital producers and/or writers
• Demonstrated excellence in breaking news situations, as well as success in developing long-form journalism
• Strong editorial judgment, news writing and editing skills
• Understanding of science journalism standards
• Proven track record in translating editorial strategy into daily results
• Organized and effective communicator
• Skilled at adapting to a changing environment and leading others through change
Note: The person in this role will regularly work PM ET hours with flexibility to shift as needed for big events and news.

In compliance with local law, we are disclosing the compensation, or a range thereof, for roles in locations where legally required. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors, including but not limited to external market data, internal equity, location, skill set, experience, and/or performance. Base pay is just one component of Warner Bros. Discovery's total compensation package for employees. Pay Range: $73,500.00 - $136,500.00 salary per year. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards. In addition, Warner Bros. Discovery provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays and sick time and vacation.
