Assignment Editor (Freelance)
Overview & Responsibilities:

CBS Sports seeks an Assignment Editor for a full-time staff position that will support productions for all sports, with an emphasis on soccer for the Golazo Network. The Assignment Editor must stay up-to-date on sporting events to prioritize and anticipate needs for coverage and content acquisition, while conducting newsgathering across multiple CBS platforms, including but not limited to CBS Sports' linear and digital productions, our partners across CBS News, Radio, and Affiliates, as well as schools, their local stations, and social platforms. The Assignment Editor must be able to aggressively respond to breaking news and requests, and work closely with internal teams and operations to ensure all audio and video material is recorded and distributed across productions and platforms. The Assignment Editor may also be responsible for hiring ENG crews and making sure their needs are met, and coordinating with remote productions providing live and taped content for all shows. The Assignment Editor will team with other desk staff on schedule and calendar planning for all sporting events, related coverage, and guests. The Assignment Editor will maintain daily contact with studio producers to anticipate, respond to, and meet their show needs. The Assignment Editor will meet regularly with editorial staff to discuss new ideas and content, will have close contact with Legal and Business Affairs contributors to navigate rights and clearance issues. This job will be primarily an in-person role, and shifts will include regularly working on nights and weekends. This is a hybrid, full-time role in Stamford, CT.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Conducting newsgathering across multiple CBS platforms.
• React immediately to breaking news and requests
• Identify and acquire content for use across productions, including news conferences, interviews and highlights.
• Hire freelance ENG crews
• Editorial and logistical planning of coverage
• Understand compliance with rights and clearance guidelines
• Post highlights for CBS affiliates on video distribution site
• Must be able to handle logistics under deadline
• Schedule and calendar planning on all sporting events
• Provide story ideas and recommend content for use in coverage
• Communicate regularly with producers on content
• Work with CBS affiliates and others on developing stories to share of information, video and sound
• Gather transmission information (fiber, satellite, streaming, etc.) for televised games
• Work closely with media asset management to ensure all games and content is being recorded
• Stay informed and up-to-date on sporting events and storylines
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, and communicate with urgency and clarity to producers, on-air talent and production associates.
• Must be skilled at identifying news and emerging storylines; gathering ideas and content for potential storytelling to enhance and support coverage across CBS Sports platforms.
• Use deep sports knowledge, an insatiable curiosity, and sound news judgment, to support storytelling that is timely, relevant, innovative, and inclusive.
• Demonstrate an understanding of sports media production, including knowledge of successful content creation for television, digital video, or similar programming
• Proactively identify and suggest solutions to address potential coverage

Basic Qualifications:
• Strong knowledge in sports, with specialized emphasis on college sports
• Possess depth of knowledge in fiber, satellite, cellular, FTP, and viral newsgathering procedures
• A resourceful ability to conduct research and a passion for discovering and sharing new knowledge is a must.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Strong editorial judgment
• Must be able to work nights, weekends, and flexible hours.
• Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment under deadlines and prioritize assignments
• Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong knowledge in content acquisition
• Preferred knowledge with Microsoft Office programs: Outlook, Excel, Word
• Working knowledge of television production and electronic and social media newsgathering
• A resourceful ability to conduct content research and a passion for discovering content and sharing information is a must.
• Must have excellent writing and communication skills, and demonstrate a keen attention to detail.
• Must have experience with variety of approaches to Internet searches and be fluent in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet and best practices for using social media.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Must be able to work with limited supervision while also thriving in a team-oriented environment
• History of working collaboratively across departments with peers and colleagues to advance content and coverage
• Must have experience performing well under pressure, including a proven track record of responding effectively to feedback even up against deadlines for air.
• Must be a team-player with proven interpersonal skills

Additional Qualifications:
• Preferred minimum of 2 years of experience in a television-related field
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent training and experience
• Prior experience in sports journalism field is a plus
• Experience in digital and/or video preferred
