CBS News seeks an innovative and experienced journalist to lead its dynamic international team. The Bureau Chief will be based in London and leads all aspects of coverage in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The ideal candidate will have proven field experience including managing teams in hostile environments, a background in producing content, and success in developing great writing and storytelling amongst correspondent and producer teams. The ideal candidate must be focused on story coverage for a multi-platform environment-broadcast, streaming, digital, social etc-- to meet the consumers of our content wherever they consume news.
The London Bureau Chief partners with the Senior Vice President of Editorial to direct international coverage. The Chief has the essential responsibility of collaborating across CBS News platforms with executive producers, CBS News International correspondents, and others to facilitate the gathering, reporting, and producing of compelling news stories. The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader, fully engaged in motivating the CBS News' International team of journalists along with the entire production and technical teams.
The Bureau Chief will lead a team of premier journalists as they break news and pursue and deliver investigative stories. The Chief will partner with our Finance team and the SVP of Editorial to manage coverage in a fiscally responsible manner. The chief will work closely with both the CBS News international Security and London High Risk Teams to mitigate and ensure the safety of journalists deploying to hostile environments. This person will also be responsible for keeping the CBS Safe Travel and Crisis Management Plan up to date. Also responsible for maintaining and developing relations with partnering news organisations from Asia to Europe. The Chief will partner with peers from competing networks in the management of a unique television pooling agreement shared by network London bureau chiefs for coverage of major royal and other public events. The Chief will also lead a network of local producers in numerous countries around the world who report to the Chief daily.
The Chief will establish strong ties across divisions within the organisation to ensure collaboration in efforts to tell stories that reach and significantly impact our audiences. The Chief will establish a collaborative relationship with diplomatic missions, royal courts, governments, and other leading organisations around the globe.
The Chief should have experience in evaluating talent and creating opportunities for both career development and advancement at all levels of the Bureau and CBS News as a whole. They must be able to create an inclusive environment that demonstrates all network resources in this effort.
What will you be doing?
• Lead a team of experienced journalists, and production staff covering Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
• Help guide the bureau's correspondents and production teams during all news events.
• Lead the team effectively by providing timely & constructive feedback and creating an inclusive culture of respect and trust.
• Serve as a strategic leader who positions the bureau and the network as a whole in a position to both break news and offer investigative stories. They will also help propose critical interviews and story ideas for all broadcasts.
• Motivate and lead the bureau while inspiring a new generation of journalists.
• Work collaboratively with their business partners and colleagues to create an inclusive working environment that effectively uses resources to create content that distinguishes CBS News.
• Understand the importance of sharing the news across multiple formats to meet the demands of changing technology and consumers with an eye on accuracy, integrity and objectivity
• Provide constructive and timely employee feedback.
• Manage the budgetary aspects of the bureau in an effective and financially prudent manner.
What are we looking for?
The Bureau Chief will have significant journalistic experience and leadership ability. They must have strong interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to build positive relationships across the organisation. The capacity to help journalists identify stories and open doors that allow for the building of journalistic networks and the development of critical sources is key. Able to work effectively with and across all levels of the organisation is necessary. Strong organisational and communication (oral and written) skills are critical along with the ability to balance projects and priorities.
