FiveThirtyEight uses data and visualization to cover politics, sports and science. Our newsroom is supportive, innovative and collaborative while trying to tell stories in the best ways possible.

A Day in the Life…

Roughly two-thirds of the internship will be spent working on daily charts, with a heavy emphasis on mentorship and constructive editing throughout. The rest of the internship will be designed - in collaboration with the Senior Editor for Data Visualization - around the intern's own interests. That can take numerous forms of reader-facing and/or internal projects.

Tasks will include:
• Crafting daily charts to FiveThirtyEight publication standards under the supervision of editors or more senior Visual Journalists.
• Regularly attending newsroom meetings and participating in our editorial workflow.
• Pitching in on larger team initiatives with the help and guidance of senior team members.
• Contributing original ideas for chart forms, stories and interactive features.
• Designing, alongside their manager, a growth-oriented plan for their non-charts time.

What we are looking for…

We're looking for a recent graduate who is excited about using data visualization to create powerful journalism. This is a highly collaborative role, so we're also looking for candidates who are excited to work across our newsroom. If you don't check every box below, that's OK!
• Experience working in Adobe Illustrator.
• Demonstrated ability in at least two of the following: journalism, data visualization and programming. School work or self-published pieces count!
• Knowledge of FiveThirtyEight and the kinds of journalism we create.

(Preferred Qualifications)
• An interest in sports and/or politics.
• A background in statistics.

Required Education:
• At the time of application, must currently be enrolled in an accredited college or university and taking at least one class – OR – be a recent graduate of an accredited college or university within the last 6 months - OR - be currently participating in the Disney College Program, Disney Culinary Program or Disney Professional Internship Program

Preferred Education:
• Senior or recent graduate with a degree from a two or four-year school with emphasis in art, design, journalism, computer science.

Additional Details:
• This is a hybrid internship where the intern will be asked to work in the office occasionally and work remotely the rest of the time. There is the possibility of this internship being remote only.
• The internship requires a working, reliable internet connection.
• If hybrid, the candidate must be willing to relocate to the New York City area and provide own housing and transportation for the duration of the internship
• The approximate dates of this internship are January – May/June 2023
• Candidate must be available to work full-time hours (approximately 40 hours per week, Mon-Fri in EST) for the duration of the internship
• Must be able to have a consistent, reliable work schedule throughout the session
