Job Description
The Travel News Intern supports CNBC's Travel Editor to manage the CNBC Travel webpage. This role is ideal for university undergraduates aspiring to explore a career in travel news journalism. You should have keen interests related to news about the aviation and hotels industries, pandemic travel recovery, travel trends and geopolitical conflict that affect the travel industry. There will be opportunities to learn about the fundamentals of journalism in digital and television mediums.
Your responsibilities include, but not limited to:
• Researching stories for CNBC's Travel Editor, with the goal to eventually report and write your own news stories under the guidance of the Travel Editor
• Help in locating and interacting (including setting up interviews) with sources to support stories in progress
• Create charts and choose images and videos to create compelling news stories
• Ingest articles in preparation for publication
• Clip travel news videos for CNBC.com
• Be involved in sharing, discussing and/or pitching ideas for news stories
• Liaise with freelance travel writers on behalf of the Travel Editor, including reviewing story pitches, and managing their contracts and questions.
Qualifications
• University undergraduates majoring in journalism, business, mass communication and/or media production
• Keen interest in the travel industry
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage and interact with colleagues, media professionals and business executives
• Ability to learn quickly, prioritize tasks and operate under tight deadlines
• Ability to work in a face-paced news environment
• Superior organizational and note-keeping skills
• Willingness to be pro-active and accept a steep learning curve
• Fluency in English language is essential
• Flexible to work morning shifts
