Vox Media
Remote / Virtual
Vox Media is seeking a Development Producer to partner with our Executive Producer and video and audio teams in developing and producing a new slate of ambitious content across mediums: short form videos, podcasts, and longer form premium docuseries. In this role a primary focus will be growing a multimedia brand around one of The Verge's biggest talents.
As Development Producer you will initially lead the development, production, workflow, and strategy of all creative properties built around our executive editor. Starting with our editor's weekly column, you will work to convert that reporting into compelling short form video scripts. From there, you will focus on strategically growing the brand through larger media projects, including multiple podcasts, special projects, and longer form documentaries and TV series. You must be comfortable wearing many hats at different times - working simultaneously as a strong, hands-on story producer and script editor, and a savvy development leader, capable of transforming a kernel of an idea into a compelling proof of concept. The scope of the Development Producer's role will eventually extend to other Verge video and audio initiatives.
We're looking for candidates with wildly creative and editorially sharp ideas. If you don't know a Canon C100 from a Sony A7III that's fine, but if you have experience writing about technology and/or editing features about them we encourage you to apply. If you're a writer or editor looking to venture into new media this could be a great opportunity for you.
What You'll Do
• Act as lead producer on greenlit audio and video projects, overseeing all aspects of production from scripts and bookings to delivery, and working collaboratively with our audio and video teams
• Own story direction/angles, table-reads, pre-production/field plans, shoots and edits
• Conduct reporting, research, and writing as needed
• Conceive of and drive the development and execution of new creative across short form video, longform and TV, podcasts, and other special projects
• Build decks, treatments, and proof of concept reels for show pitches and new formats
• Work with the Executive Producer to continuously identify new development opportunities and execute on those ideas, thinking thoughtfully about how we can grow and evolve our executive editor's voice and audience relationship
What You'll Bring
• Expertise in The Verge's coverage areas, including consumer tech
• Track record in the development space, creating and producing ambitious creative and editorial content across mediums
• Skill in building compelling development materials
• Background in video and audio production appreciated but not a requisite
• Strong research, writing, and editing skills
• Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple things at once and work independently as needed
This is a full-time position. Remote applications ok.
In addition to your cover letter and resume, please convert an excerpt from this column, APPLE ISN'T JUST A WALLED GARDEN, IT'S A CARRIER, into a one page video script. We are specifically looking for how you would translate this column into a visual treatment - what visuals (images, videos, Dieter on camera, graphics, text, other mixed media) you would use to bring the episode to life. Please also review Dieter Bohn's work on The Verge.com, on the Vergecast podcast, and on our Verge YouTube channel. From there please pitch us one podcast or video series idea that we could do true to extend the brand of our executive editor.
