Job Description
The Assistant News Director plays a key role in strategic planning and daily coordination of our newsroom.
The Assistant News Director ensures that newsroom decisions are on point to the 12 News brand and the needs of our viewers. Candidates must have strong leadership skills, solid news judgment, the ability to showcase important stories on all platforms, and know how to dominate breaking news, in-depth coverage and weather coverage. As the #2 newsroom manager, the Assistant News Director will work closely with the News Director and various other departments on planning and execution of our daily and long-term mission.
• Assists the News Director with management of all aspects of the News Department.
• Assists with planning, staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the News team.
• Must excel and be a vocal leader on breaking news, in-depth coverage, weather coverage on tv and digital platforms.
• Involved in coaching newsroom employees.
• Assists on hiring, evaluation, scheduling of employees.
• Heavily involved in developing news coverage strategy for on air and digital platforms.
• Critiques newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage and provide mentoring feedback to news staff.
• Maintains and communicates established quality standards.
• Conducts one on one newscast reviews / reporting reviews.
• Assigns projects to staff and verifies that deadlines are being met.
• Ensures achievement of viewer rating goals.
• Assists in managing news programming and evaluation of equipment needs to produce quality programming.
• Serves as the News Director in their absence.
• Communicates and works with other departments within the station.
• Works directly with the GM when needed.
• Engaged in strategy and cost analysis for outside news and ''other 'station events.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Requirements & Skills:
• • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
• Fluency in English.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
• Minimum three years in news management (Depending on market size)
• Ability to identify the developmental needs of others and to coach, mentor or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge or skills
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Ability to effectively listen to fully understand employee needs and communicate with a team to shape a solution
• Knowledge of the Providence / New Bedford Market preferred
Work Environment: Deadline driven environment can be stressful. Must be willing and able to work any and all shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays and be on call as needed.
