Job Description
OverviewNewshub is a multi-platform, highly collaborative newsroom and our team is committed to creating and delivering great content and great journalism to our audiences. We believe in being the best in delivering news that matters to Kiwis each and every day.
The purpose of this this role is to produce Newshub bulletins, foreign news and news stories as required, with a view to maximising audience share for the programme.
Responsibilities
• Build bulletins rundowns, ensuring the lineup is stacked to draw in and maintain audiences.
• Spot news angles and assist reporters in story development
• Assist in story selection for bulletins
• Produce bulletins, foreign news and news stories.
• Line produce bulletins in the control room
• Ensure on-air graphics are prepared and error-free
• Write and sub intros for newsreaders - ensuring the writing is both accurate and compelling.
• Fact check stories and intros
• Ensure all stories are editorially and legally sound, and BSA-compliant.
• Ensure Director of TV News, Senior Director of News and legal counsel are involved in decision making on legally fraught stories
• Write and cut Openers, Playoffs and Top Stories - ensuring they are enticing and interesting.
• Identify potential live opportunities, working within the resource constraints
• Chase and set up interviews, as required
• Think creatively about the delivery of the bulletin, continually striving for innovation and fresh ideas using all available production elements
• Produce breaking news specials.
• Sub reporter scripts, as required
• Provide feedback to reporters to help them develop their craft
• Be an avid consumer of news
• Maintain an excellent relationship with key personnel both within the newsroom and in the broader Discovery ANZ team
• The Employee shall ensure they are familiar with the Employer's health and safety policies and procedures, and any modifications to those policies and procedures that may be introduced from time to time.
• Carry out your work safely and without endangering or causing harm to yourself, fellow staff members, contractors, customers, visitors, or the general public.
• Other duties as required.
• The Company may, after fair and reasonable consultation, change your duties, from time to time, for commercial reasons but not so as to substantially change the nature of the position.
Qualifications
• An excellent and experienced journalist with a nose for news.
• Tertiary level qualification or equivalent industry experience of 5+ years
• Strong organisational skills
• Excellent editorial nous
• Experience using news production systems such as iNews and Avid UX.
• Strong English language skills
• Close attention to detail
• Knowledge of New Zealand news and current affairs
• Excellent knowledge of laws governing defamation, libel and other applicable legal issues
• Excellent knowledge of Broadcasting Standards Authority rules and guidelines
• An enthusiastic and positive team player who loves news
• Willing to take direction and also to encourage and advise less experienced journalists
• A generous team member who appreciates individual and business successes
• Flexibility to work varied shifts and hours if required
• Ability to work to tight deadlines and perform effectively under pressure
• A generator of original ideas
• Understanding of and engagement with digital platforms including social networks
