We're looking for an Applied Science Manager who combines exceptional technical, research and analytical capabilities to lead a team that will be integral to the continued improvement of Amazon Music AI. As an Applied Science Manager, you will be responsible for data-driven improvements and evaluation for our spoken language understanding models. You will be responsible for leading a team of scientists and data experts to build ML models for assessing Alexa's success at Natural Understanding with accuracy, reliability, scalability to new languages & devices, low latency and limited dependence on manually annotated data. Your work will directly impact our customers in the form of products and services that make use of speech and language technology, particularly in developing predictive analytics models for user in continuously improving the Alexa experience for our customers. We work on machine learning problems for music classification, recommender systems, dialogue systems, NLP, and music information retrieval.

Key job responsibilities
As an Applied Science manager you will lead a team of talented Scientists to develop novel algorithms and modeling techniques to advance the state of the art in spoken language understanding, specifically recommender systems, information retrieval, signal processing, NLP/NLU or dialogue systems. Your work will directly impact our customers in the form of products and services that make use of speech and language technology. Your team will leverage Amazon's heterogeneous data sources and large-scale computing resources to accelerate advances in spoken language understanding. You are also expected to publish in top tier conferences.
• Conducting and coordinating process development leading to improved and streamlined processes for model development.
• Ensuring data quality throughout all stages of acquisition and processing, including such areas as data sourcing/collection, ground truth generation, normalization, transformation, cross-lingual alignment/mapping, etc.
• Providing technical and scientific guidance to your team members.
• Presenting proposals and results in a clear manner backed by data and coupled with actionable conclusions
• Communicating effectively with senior management as well as with colleagues from science, engineering and business backgrounds, in written and verbal forms
• Supporting the career development of your team members.

The successful candidate will have an established background in defining metrics, building ML models, a strong technical ability, demonstrated experience in people management, excellent project management skills, great communication skills, and the motivation to achieve results in a fast-paced environment.

About the team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• PhD degree with 4+ years of applied research experience or a Master's degree and 6+ years of experience of applied research experience
• 3+ years of experience in building machine learning models for business application
• Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
• 3+ years of experience directly managing scientists and/or machine learning engineers

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, or related field with a specialization in speech recognition, natural language processing, or machine learning
• 5+ years of direct people management experience, including duties such as performance evaluation and career development
• Extensive knowledge and practical experience in several of the following areas: machine learning, statistics, deep learning, NLP, recommendation systems, dialogue systems, information retrieval;
• Track record of scientific publications in premier journals and conferences;
• Scientific thinking and the ability to invent, a track record of thought leadership, and contributions that have advanced the field (Published in top tier conferences in the field of Machine Learning and NLP)
• Ability to distill informal customer requirements into problem definitions, dealing with ambiguity and competing objectives;
• Experience handling gigabyte and terabyte size datasets;
• Skilled with Java, C++, or other programming language, as well as with R, MATLAB, Python or similar scripting language;
• Professional experience in software development (software design and development life cycle);
• Superior verbal and written communication skills, ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts.
