Pixar Undergraduate Program (PUP) - Summer 2022

Are you passionate about visual storytelling in animated films? Do you want to contribute to digital art in the intersection of technology and visual art? Are you excited to bring yourself and your brilliance- whether it's in coding, illustration, painting, crafting, or photography - to what Pixar Technical Directors do? Are you eager to learn (and try!) how artists at Pixar create and collaborate across the technical pipeline?

The Pixar Undergraduate Program (PUP) is a 12-week classroom-based course taught by our Technical Directors (TDs). In this program, you will explore technical career options while learning about Pixar's filmmaking process. Our curriculum focuses on the various technical aspects of our animated film pipeline including modeling, set dressing, shading, characters, layout (camera & staging), lighting, and effects, with a different area covered every week. As a PUP, you will work on individual and group projects to explore concepts covered in lectures and presentations given by our TDs.

Demo Reel / Portfolio Qualifications:

Demonstrates some combination of:
• Visual excellence. This may be through 3D digital art (Maya, Blender etc.), game design, live-action filmmaking, illustration etc.
• Technical excellence. This may be through coding projects (Python, C++ etc.), game development, computer graphics, writing plugins etc.
• Projects which show innovation or stylization are a plus.

Qualifications:
• You are an excellent communicator and collaborator. This may be demonstrated by clear presentation of your work, breakdowns and tutorials, teamwork experiences, etc.
• You are interested in a career as a Technical Director* at an animation studio.
• You already possess the legal right to work in the United States.
• You are available to work full-time Mon 6.6.22 - Fri 8.26.22
*What is a Technical Director (TD)? TDs, also known as technical artists, are filmmakers who solve the visual and technical challenges faced in producing the imagery of Pixar's films. TDs can be anything from highly technical software tool developers, to digital sculptors, to anywhere in between. TDs use and customize 3D animation software to produce the final images seen in our films, often inventing new workflows, rigs and tools along the way.

Eligibility:

Traditional Academic Paths:
• You are a freshman, sophomore or junior pursuing a Bachelor ' s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, Digital Art, Art or a related field

Less Traditional Professional Paths:

Pixar recognizes that obtaining skills and knowledge may take different forms and has expanded intern eligibility to include additional life experiences including:
• Career Transition: those whose previous work/academic experiences differ vastly from animation, VFX, gaming and other computer graphics focused industries
• Armed Forces: those who have served in the armed forces and are in a retraining program
• Home Schooled: those who are self-taught via an alternative educational path
