Job Description:

This is a full-time position designing, executing and installing set designs for approximately 27 plays per year. Must have great communication and collaboration skills and have experience with Vector Works, AutoCad, and/or similar programs. Job involves working and communicating well with directors, fellow designers, student workers, carpenters and other staff members. Experience working in an educational environment is preferred. Experience in Technical direction and/or master carpentry a plus. This position reports to the Production Manager and the Director of Instruction.

Job Requirements:

Participate in managing a production schedule of approximately 27 theatrical productions per year.Attend all design and production meetings and collaborate with the various directors and other production team members to create the visual appearance and function of the scenic elements used in each of the productions.Produce color sketches and/or renderings of the sets and properties, sometimes scale models of the various sets, and scale mechanical/construction drawings that fully describe the settings.Discuss any design changes with the director and make any necessary design revisions. Then supply all revisions to the design team and the director.Draft ground plans, front elevations and working drawings for carpentry crew and the lighting designer.Oversee the quality/execution of set pieces being built with the Carpentry crew.Mentor and work with student workers, when applicable. Provide a productive and positive work environment that is conducive to effective learning.Work with the production manager and other staff to ensure the safe use of the stage and shop equipment within the Production Department.Collaborate with the properties supervisor on identifying set dressing and in-house furniture that will be needed for the production. This also includes any needed rentals.Collaborate with the Production Manager on all material orders needed, all build and load-in schedules, and any other necessary planning materials and schedules.Supervise all set load-ins to the performance stage.Attend all designer run-throughs and supervise the implementation of any necessary set or masking changes to the final set.
